Battery Fire Protection

Take on the heat with Dow silicone solutions for your battery fire protection challenges.

Passenger safety within an electric vehicle is of paramount concern. Increasing standards to address concerns are driving the need for improved battery safety and materials for mitigation of thermal events such as fire, explosion, or smoke.

Silicones offer several material advantages for thermal mitigation, including fire-retardant properties and a unique capacity to self-extinguish, avoiding propagation when flames ignite. Additionally, they offer performance over a wide temperature range and can withstand high temperatures from electric vehicle thermal runaway. 

Silicone materials are available in different formats, offering a range of thermal insulation and fire protection performance for different cell types and module and pack configurations.

Dow offers a broad product portfolio of silicone materials for battery fire protection, including:

  • LSR coatings and encapsulants offering rapid room-temperature cure, thermal and flame protection.
