Lubricants, Heat Transfer and Deicing Fluids
Formulating the next generation of high-performance lubricants
High-performance lubricants, heat transfer fluids and aircraft deicing fluids address key challenges for a wide variety of applications such as transmissions, axles, engines, metal processing, aircraft, food processing, electronics, commercial marine and gas turbines.
Why are lubricants important?
Lubricants and base stocks address key challenges such as transmissions, axles, engines, metal processing, commercial marine and gas turbines.
Polyalkylene glycols (PAGs) improve energy efficiency by reducing friction, increasing equipment durability and improving fuel economy.
Non-varnishing synthetic base stocks enable extended lubricant performance with lower downtime and improved cleanliness.
Low-odor ingredients and base stocks, with low toxicity, meet food and beverage processing standards for use where incidental contamination occurs.
Applications
Industrial Lubricants and Base Stocks
Helping meet the industrial lubrication market demands for energy efficiency, environmental acceptability and high performance across applications.
Food and Beverage Processing
Delivering inhibited heat transfer fluids, silicone antifoams and defoaming agents designed to address undesirable temperature fluctuations and eliminate problematic foam during the production, processing and packaging of food and beverages.
Metalworking Fluids
Helping metalworking formulators solve everyday challenges by leveraging the manufacturing and support expertise of Dow.
Transportation
Delivering for an industry that is pushing not just for a more sustainable future for vehicles, but for one that is also safer, more connected, autonomous, electric, and profitable.
Get on board for longer lubricant life
UCON™ WaterGuard (WG) Stabilizers can extend the life of lubricants used in marine applications, including deck equipment by improving the hydrolytic stability of a fluid formulated with esters.

UCON™ Polyalkylene Glycol (PAG) Lubricant Technology can help meet stringent food and beverage industry requirements and achieve peace of mind for manufacturers.
What are heat transfer fluids and why are they important?
Heat transfer fluids are available in three distinct fluid chemistries: synthetic organic, inhibited glycols and silicone. The technologies offer excellent thermal stability for high and low temperatures as well as corrosion protection for a variety of heat management and heat transfer applications. These include geothermal heat pumps and other water-based systems to food and beverage processing; and from pharmaceutical and polymer processing to Concentrated Solar Power (CSP) generation.

Midstream Oil and Gas Solutions
Enabling midstream operations for demand efficiency and system health for reliable and cost-effective processing and transmission.
Invest in quality fluids
Heat transfer fluids make up about 1% of the total cost of a system, but they have the ability to ruin it completely if the fluid is low quality. Investing in quality fluids is investing in your system’s future. Dow heat transfer fluids have been helping systems achieve peak performance since 1929. We are the only fluid supplier with over 90 years in the industry. As a back-integrated supplier, Dow sets the bar for purity and longevity with DOWFROST and DOWTHERM…lasting over 20 years. Don’t compromise the lifetime of your system…Invest in it.
DOWFROST™ Heat Transfer Fluid
A formulation of 96.0 percent food grade propylene glycol plus food grade corrosion inhibitors. Solutions of this in water provide freeze protection to below -50°C (-60°F) and burst protection to below -73°C (-100°F).
DOWTHERM™ A Heat Transfer Fluid
Versatile Heat Transfer Fluid that can operate in either liquid or vapor phases in order to collect, transport, and store heat in a variety of heat transfer applications, such as concentrated solar power (CSP) systems.
Lubricants, Heat Transfer and Deicing Fluids

What are the different types of aircraft deicing and anti-icing fluids?
Aircraft deicing and anti-icing fluids are available as either ethylene glycol- or propylene glycol-based fluids. When the weather is unpredictable and challenging, they offer rapid and uniform wetting and spreading on aircraft surfaces, as well as long holdover times at very cold temperatures. They can be used as concentrate and ready to use (predilute) to assist in removal of ice, snow and frost from the exterior surfaces of aircraft.
