CONTINUUM™ Bimodal Polyethylene Resins
Bimodal technology: Stronger pipes, bottles, caps and closure components
CONTINUUM™ Bimodal Polyethylene Resins provide proven, trusted performance across a wide range of applications including piping, bottle and cap and closure components. Each combines incredible toughness, long-term durability and exceptional flexibility within a single, sustainable solution, delivering the qualities and capabilities processors, manufacturers, brands and consumers require.
Discover the difference
CONTINUUM™ Resins, made using UNIPOL™ II Technology, offer increased polymer design flexibility, a broad molecular weight range, and a wider range of high-performance characteristics. These advantages set it apart from traditional unimodal Polyethylene (PE). This leads to better batch-to-batch consistency, higher efficiency, and lower scrap rates. CONTINUUM™ Resins also offer outstanding performance for pipe, bottles, caps and closures, durable goods, and supports sustainability efforts.
Building better infrastructure
Aging, deteriorating infrastructure and the need for increased sustainability are major, global concerns. CONTINUUM™ Resins deliver exceptional toughness and durability for long-term pipeline performance in any climate. With high elevated temperature and pressure ratings, resistance to crack growth, and broad operating windows, they meet industry standards for municipal, utility and industrial pipeline applications including portable water and natural gas and water distribution, oil and gas gathering, telecom conduit, mining, drainage, and more.
Our rich portfolio of high density polyethylene (HDPE) and medium density polyethylene (MDPE) resins allows production of a broad range of pipe diameters and thicknesses with opportunities for downgauging.
Strong fusion capabilities to help produce seamless, virtually leak-free pipelines without mechanical fittings or gaskets, which tend to corrode and leak over time.
Low thermal conductivity for more uniform system temperatures and less need for insulation.
Excellent seismic resistance for improved protection with the potential for reduced repair costs and economic impact in the event of an earthquake.
Good resistance to ultraviolet (UV) light degradation.
Resins for Water Pipe
CONTINUUM™ Resins help produce extremely durable, leak-resistant pipelines that deliver water efficiently while also helping conserve it.
Resins for Gas Distribution Pipe
CONTINUUM™ Resins offers decades of safe sustainability services for natural gas pipelines.
Resins for Oil & Gas Gathering Pipe
CONTINUUM™ Resins can withstand the harsh conditions faced by oil and gas pipeline.
Resins for Corrugated Pipe
CONTINUUM™ Resins are an excellent choice for a wide range of corrugate pipe applications, including mining drainage and more.
Resins for Conduit Pipe
CONTINUUM™ Resins help 5G telecommunications networks and data centers keep us all connected by enabling development of long-lasting conduit and microduct.
Case Studies
Dow and Princeton University jointly received the Plastics Pipe Institute's Sustainable Achievement award, acknowledging our significant contributions to the TIGER Project, an inventive geo-exchange system.
In alignment with Princeton University's objective to reduce its carbon footprint and achieve a net-zero campus by 2046, we played a crucial role in supporting one of the largest geo-exchange energy projects in North America. With over 1,000 wells already installed out of the anticipated 2,000, connected by extensive miles of plastic pipe, our CONTINUUM™ Bimodal Polyethylene Resins were instrumental in ensuring robust, leak-free, and corrosion-resistant solutions for the project.
Disrupting water supply for businesses and residents, the unprecedented Texas freeze in February 2021 led to the bursting of water pipes in the small rural towns of Aspermont, Carey, and Northfield.
Dow collaborated with Pipeline Plastics and Modern Dispersions to contribute 42,000 feet of CONTINUUM™ Bimodal Polyethylene Resin high-density polyethylene (HDPE) pipe. This initiative significantly benefited these communities and will for years to come. It also earned recognition through various awards.
The Plainview Hutterite community in Manitoba had relied on a coal-fired central boiler heating. However, due to the Canadian government's energy transition, the use of coal is impractical.
In collaboration with Manitoba Hydro and Polytubes, we are constructing pipe systems using CONTINUUM™ Bimodal Polyethylene Resins. Helping communities transition to natural gas provides a safe, clean, and reliable energy source.

Breaking the mold
Believe it or not, the same qualities that make CONTINUUM™ Resins ideal for municipal water pipe also allow them to produce first-rate bottles for applications that demand more durability, safety and security.
High levels of stiffness, impact strength and environmental stress crack resistance (ESCR) mean that our bimodal polyethylene (PE) resins not only enable significant performance improvements, but also offer opportunities to reduce material use, incorporate post-consumer recycle (PCR) content and lower overall costs.
More sustainability innovation
One example, CONTINUUM™ DMDE-6620 HEALTH+™ Bimodal Polyethylene Resin, is changing the game in pharmaceutical, healthcare and nutritional bottling.
By combining our proven bimodal HDPE with a proprietary nucleating agent, this groundbreaking material offers a single-pellet solution for high-performing, more mono-layer bottles.
How does it work?
Outstanding stiffness, top load and wall strength allow wall thickness and bottle weight reductions of more than 20%, while improved gaseous barrier performance helps provide longer shelf life with up to 50% lower moisture vapor transmission rate (MVTR). The result is lighter, thinner, 100% recyclable bottles that maintain stringent pharmaceutical performance requirements (or offer even higher levels of performance at incumbent bottle weights).
A spart of our DOW™ HEALTH+™ service offering, CONTINUUM™ DMDE-6620 HEALTH+™ Resin also includes:
- Secure, global product supply
- 1-year notification of change (NOC) + 1-year right to buy
- U.S. FDA 21 CFR 177.1520(c) 3.2a
- U.S. FDA Drug Master File 1847
- U.S. Pharmacopoeia (Class VI)
- Canadian HPFB No Objection, EU, No 10/2011
Finally, like all CONTINUUM™ blow molding grades, this product offers excellent processability in a wide range of processes, including compression blow forming (CBF), injection blow molding (IBM) and extrusion blow molding (EBM). In fact, CONTINUUM™ DMDE-6620 HEALTH+™ Resin can even help increase productivity, with up to 33% faster cycle times.

How can CONTINUUM™ Bimodal Polyethylene Resins help improve your bottle applications? Let’s find the answers together.
Sealing the deal
The tremendous performance that makes CONTINUUM™ Resins a perfect choice for pipe also makes them a powerful option for rigid packaging.
For example, as part of the EVERCAP™ Innovative Closure Resins, these extremely tough bimodal PE resins offer an exceptional fit for injection or compression molded caps and closures.
Their unique balance of stiffness, impact strength and environmental stress crack resistance (ESCR) allows CONTINUUM™ Resins to offer unsurpassed lightweight closure performance for pressurized beverages, harsh chemicals, medicine, cosmetics and other products that require increased durability, safety and security. And, in addition to significantly enhanced performance, reduced material use and excellent organoleptics, they can also offer opportunities for incorporation of post-consumer recycle (PCR) content and lower overall costs.
The inherent softness of PE also enables functional bore seal, helping create airtight barrier sealing without the need for liners. This allows conversion from two-piece, lined polypropylene (PP) closures to lighter, one-piece PE closures – with the potential for reduced production time and costs.
